At the root of many contemporary economic problems (the UK's productivity puzzle, deterioration in the terms & conditions of employment) is one simple issue:

Managers too often see workers not as a 'resource' to be invested in & nurtured for the long-term good of the organisation, but rather as a cost which can be reduced for short-term gain while the longer term consequences will be fixed (in some way) by technology.

The de-humanisaton of economics is a major problem!

"You don’t need a PhD in Economics to understand that when an economy is slowing, cutting federal spending, causing massive layoffs and increasing taxes by way of tariffs are a recipe for financial disaster. ...

Trump just updated Marie Antoinette’s infamous line 'Let them eat Cake' when told that her subjects could not afford bread to, 'Let them drive Teslas.'”

"Sources also tell WIRED that Musk has wanted a government shutdown—an aim that runs contrary to the White House’s stated desire to avoid one—in part because it would potentially make it easier to eliminate the jobs of hundreds of thousands of federal workers, essentially achieving a permanent shutdown."

WIRED · Elon Musk Has Wanted the Government ShutdownVon Jake Lahut

Equal pay claims in retail are gaining momentum as gender disparities (often between male warehouse & female shop floor staff) are litigated.

Employers can try to pre-empt equal pay claims with an audit of their workforce to check discrepancies.

But companies 'don’t always like the results' with clients (apparently) asking how to check if they had an equal pay problem without creating any paper trail that might have to be disclosed later in court.

Rather than look to the USA for policy ideas, Labour would be better to look nearer home - on workers' rights, at Spain, for instance, where moves to enhance the protections for workers have been broadly economically positive...

Whatever the Atlanticists believe (and despite Brexit) we are Europeans & should be looking at our neighbours for better ways of managing our economic affairs... not to America!

"The truth is that [DEI's] a smokescreen to justify efforts to undo decades of civil rights progress.

I have a PhD in US history with a specific focus on race, religion, and social movements. I’ve studied the origins of racism and white supremacy, and one clear pattern emerges: for every gesture toward racial progress there is a swift and angry backlash – or ;whitelash.'”

"In late January, a tragic mid-air collision between an American Airlines flight and a US Army Black Hawk helicopter over Washington, D.C. killed 67 people.

Who knew it would turn into a debate on diversity? …

DEI has become a boogeyman in the federal government, often blamed for every ill."

"But under Trump, opportunistically seizing on the psychological wound of exactly one Black president, that coded language has increasingly echoed authoritarians who have moved their population in horrific atrocities against their neighbors, both within and outside our borders. This propaganda is so effective that most people don’t even realize they’re swimming it."

“'It' is happening and we’re letting it. If we’re going to change it, we at least need to understand why and how 'it' is happening here.

The American soul has been tenderized for decades by a right-wing propaganda machine that used coded language to turn workers against workers and undermine the progress of the New Deal and the Civil Rights Movement."

"That is at the heart of Trump’s war on his own followers: They cheer for him, but they depend on the government programs liberals built and liberals sustain. If sacrificing their wellbeing (or in some cases their very lives) is what it takes to destroy the government’s ability to serve the citizenry, that’s exactly what Trump, Musk, and Republicans will do."

"So while some of this stuff has been postponed for another month, so you have the inflationary impact of tariffs and there is an inflationary impact even of anticipated tariffs as companies stockpile and start to raise prices to get ahead of things. At the same time, you have the uncertainty weighing on business, weighing on consumers. I'm actually shocked."

"And by the way, tariffs on steel and aluminum have gone in. One thing I learned, I had a conversation, which will appear on my own Substack in a couple of days, with Mary Lovely at the Peterson Institute, and they're applying the steel and aluminum tariffs to basically anything. made of steel and aluminum or the containers. So lawn furniture is suddenly jumping in price and those tariffs have happened."
