Michael PerryKilldeer nest on the ground, and when predators approach, the adult pretends to have a broken wing, moves away from the nest and makes pathetic cries, hoping to lure the would-be attacker into chasing them instead of the young. <br> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/naturephotography?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#naturephotography</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/nature?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#nature</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/birds?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birds</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/birders?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birders</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/birdwatchers?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birdwatchers</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/birding?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birding</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/birdwatching?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birdwatching</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/GriffithPark?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#GriffithPark</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/DailyBird?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#DailyBird</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/BirdsOfPixelfed?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#BirdsOfPixelfed</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/BirdsOfMastodon?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#BirdsOfMastodon</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/LARiver?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#LARiver</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/naturephotos?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#naturephotos</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/LAWildlife?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#LAWildlife</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/losangeles?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#losangeles</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/killdeer?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#killdeer</a>

Swede’s Photographs<p>Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus)</p><p>This killdeer was at a lake a few days ago.</p><p>"Killdeers are surprisingly unobtrusive even on green lawns, despite their warm tawny coloration. Look carefully over lawns, short-mown fields, and even parking lots, and listen for the far-carrying kill-deer. (When you hear this call, the bird may be in flight. Look for it circling you, flying stiffly on long, pointed wings. It may resemble an American Kestrel, at least until it lands on the ground and begins walking.) Though they're often found on dry land, you should also look for them on the edges of freshwater ponds and muddy lagoons." - allaboutbirds.org</p><p><a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/photo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>photo</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/photography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>photography</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/photographer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>photographer</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/photographylovers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>photographylovers</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/birds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>birds</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/birdsofmastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>birdsofmastodon</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/birdwatching" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>birdwatching</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/killdeer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>killdeer</span></a></p>
Debra Martz<p>Walking back to the truck in the parking lot, I spotted this <a href="https://photog.social/tags/Killdeer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Killdeer</span></a> that had just landed at the edge of the sidewalk. I was able to get a few shots before it sat on the ground and exhibited a broken-wing distraction display....which they do when a nest is threatened. At that point, I walked away knowing there must have been a nest nearby.</p><p><a href="https://debra-martz.pixels.com/featured/killdeer-profile-debra-martz.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">debra-martz.pixels.com/feature</span><span class="invisible">d/killdeer-profile-debra-martz.html</span></a></p><p><a href="https://photog.social/tags/bird" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bird</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/birds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>birds</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/aves" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>aves</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/birdWatching" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>birdWatching</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/birding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>birding</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/BirdsOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BirdsOfMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/nature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nature</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/FeatheredFriends" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FeatheredFriends</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/BuyIntoArt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BuyIntoArt</span></a></p>

Swede’s Photographs<p>Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus)</p><p>I photographed his killdeer yesterday while the dogs had me out for a walk. It was across the street on the neighbor's lawn. I see a couple over there frequently. But never on this side of the gravel road. There is a portion of the drainage ditch over there that rarely dries up. The neighbors sometimes trap fish there and take them to a pond on property they have somewhere around here. There is an area in on the corner of my lot that sometimes has standing water. I've seen small fish there, I'm not sure where they come from.</p><p>"Doesn’t visit feeders, but if your backyard or neighborhood contains expansive, cultivated lawns or grazed fields then you could find Killdeer foraging on your property." - allaboutbirds.org</p><p><a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/photo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>photo</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/photography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>photography</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/photographer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>photographer</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/photographylovers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>photographylovers</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/birds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>birds</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/birdsofmastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>birdsofmastodon</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/birdwatching" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>birdwatching</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/killdeer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>killdeer</span></a></p>
