Dan Goodman<p>When I read research papers that are the result of very expensive work (experiments or simulations) I always want to know: how could this project have possibly ended with a null result? And is there an argument in this paper that compares the actual result to this null? If not, I'm very suspicious.</p><p>Actually this is a good question to ask about any paper, but the high stakes of super expensive research make it particularly important to ask the question. In my experience, it is surprisingly rarely answered in the paper and I find it hard to believe in these results.</p><p><a href="https://neuromatch.social/tags/science" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>science</span></a> <a href="https://neuromatch.social/tags/neuroscience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>neuroscience</span></a></p>
Neurofrontiers<p>When I transitioned from cognitive to computational neuroscience, I found myself in a bit of a bind. I had learned calculus, but I had progressed little beyond pattern recognition: I knew which rules to apply to find solutions to which equations, but the equations themselves lacked any sort of real meaning for me. </p><p>So I struggled with understanding how formulas could be implemented in code and why the code I was reading could be described by those formulas. Resources explaining math “for neuroscientists” were unfortunately quite useless for me, because they usually presented the necessary equations for describing various neural systems, assuming the presence of that basic understanding/intuition I lacked. </p><p>Of course, I figured things out eventually (otherwise I wouldn’t be writing about it), but I’m 85% sure I’m not the only one who’s ever struggled with this, and so I wrote the tutorial I wish I could’ve had. If you’re in a similar position, I hope you’ll find it useful. And if not, maybe it helps you get a glimpse into the struggles of the non-math people in your life. Either way, it has cats.</p><p><a href="https://neurofrontiers.blog/building-a-virtual-neuron-1/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">neurofrontiers.blog/building-a</span><span class="invisible">-virtual-neuron-1/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://neuromatch.social/tags/neuroscience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>neuroscience</span></a> <a href="https://neuromatch.social/tags/math" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>math</span></a> <a href="https://neuromatch.social/tags/ComputationalNeuroscience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ComputationalNeuroscience</span></a> <a href="https://neuromatch.social/tags/tutorial" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tutorial</span></a> <a href="https://neuromatch.social/tags/academia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>academia</span></a></p>

Flipboard<p>50 years ago, Tim Bliss and Terje Lømo worked in the Oslo lab of the late neuroscientist Per Andersen, where they made a momentous discovery: the fact that when a neuron signals to another neuron frequently enough, the second one will later respond more strongly to new signals for hours afterwards. The phenomenon is called long-term potentiation (LTP) and it’s fundamental to how we learn and remember. <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mstdn.science/@KnowableMag" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>KnowableMag</span></a></span> talked to Bliss and Lømo about their discovery, and to other neuroscientists about how they’re applying knowledge about LTP to their research about memory disorders, chronic pain and more. </p><p><a href="https://knowablemagazine.org/content/article/mind/2025/memory-formation-long-term-potentiation" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">knowablemagazine.org/content/a</span><span class="invisible">rticle/mind/2025/memory-formation-long-term-potentiation</span></a></p><p><a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Science" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Science</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Biology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Biology</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Health" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Health</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Medicine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Medicine</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Neuroscience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Neuroscience</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Medicine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Medicine</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/MemoryLoss" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MemoryLoss</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/ChronicPain" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ChronicPain</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Newstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Newstodon</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/NewstodonFriday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NewstodonFriday</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/FollowFriday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FollowFriday</span></a></p>

Niko Sirmpilatze<p>🚀 Some exciting news! Our team is taking part in Google Summer of Code, which is a remote, asynchronous, global opportunity. </p><p>This is a fantastic chance for someone to get paid to contribute to "movement" or our other open-source projects in neuroscience and animal behaviour.</p><p>If you know someone who might be interested, please share widely! 🌍</p><p>Full details are here: <br><a href="https://neuroinformatics.dev/get-involved/gsoc/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">neuroinformatics.dev/get-invol</span><span class="invisible">ved/gsoc/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://neuromatch.social/tags/neuroscience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>neuroscience</span></a> <a href="https://neuromatch.social/tags/neuro" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>neuro</span></a> <a href="https://neuromatch.social/tags/behaviour" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>behaviour</span></a> <a href="https://neuromatch.social/tags/python" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>python</span></a> <a href="https://neuromatch.social/tags/gsoc2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gsoc2025</span></a></p>
Neurofrontiers<p>For the past month, I’ve watched in horror the unrelenting attacks on science and scientific institutions in the US: grants frozen, databases deleted, basic words banned, decades of progress undone overnight. And while the US is by far an extreme case, research budgets in other countries are also being reduced (or they weren’t that high to begin with). Plus, the rise of far-right extremism seems to be happening almost everywhere. </p><p>But what I’ve also seen during this time are incredible community efforts to back up data, to build decentralized infrastructure, to push back against these attacks wherever possible. And in the context of human health, it got me thinking: medical research already neglects portions of the population, so if traditional institutions won’t prioritize our health anyway, why don’t we? </p><p>What if we built a decentralized, citizen-driven research initiative, an open-source database to track and analyze health data from diverse populations across borders? A kind of bootleg science, resilient against institutional neglect and political suppression.</p><p>This is a very unbaked, maybe desperate and idealistic thought more than a plan. I have no clue where to start from, or if something similar already exists. But I’d love to hear what people think. Does this sound stupid/impossible/doable? All of the above?</p><p><a href="https://neuromatch.social/tags/science" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>science</span></a> <a href="https://neuromatch.social/tags/academia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>academia</span></a> <a href="https://neuromatch.social/tags/neuroscience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>neuroscience</span></a> <a href="https://neuromatch.social/tags/health" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>health</span></a> <a href="https://neuromatch.social/tags/BootlegScience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BootlegScience</span></a> <a href="https://neuromatch.social/tags/grassroots" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>grassroots</span></a> <a href="https://neuromatch.social/tags/CitizenScience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CitizenScience</span></a></p>
